Through an analysis of Elizabeth Inchbald's 1791 publication of 'A Simple Story, this paper seeks to demonstrate how close reading and textual analysis of fictional texts can reflect and comment on changing perspectives and beliefs in the general society, and work with other scholars to discuss how literature and its history can be seen to have political and social impact in the real world.
