Note	The letters begin with a foreword written by Reed in the 1960s. Reed describes her journey to China in 1916 after joining the Grinnell-in-China mission at the age of 26. During her long tenure at the North China Anglican Mission in Techow (Dezhou), China, she relates her encounters with Chinese rebels, Japanese occupiers, Nationalists, and Communists. Forced to leave China during World War II, she returned in 1944 to teach at a different school, in Chengtu, until departing China permanently in 1948. Reed's letters provide details about her fellow missionaries, including Alfred and Erma Heininger, Harold and Grace Matthews, Ruth Tollman, the Miles family, Dr. Emma Tucker, and many others. In the 1950s Reed traveled to Turkey to teach at the American School for Girls in Uskudar. In 1959 she returned to Syracuse, New York, and later retired in Claremont, California. At the end of the collection are two maps, one of China and another of Reed's travels in China, Europe, India, Africa, and South America.
