Charles W. DeLong was born in Gary, Indiana, in 1910. He attended Grinnell College graduating with the Class of 1931. He was a business man who sold gloves for the glove factory, manufactured sportswear, and, later, stadium seats. He and his wife, Katherine Coggeshall, had four children. Interview conducted as part of American Beliefs and Cultural Values, an American Studies class taught by Hanna Griff at Grinnell College in 1993.

Charles Hink, an early Grinnell, Iowa, inventor, holds his wheel-alignment gauge. Thousands of the gauges were ordered by the United States government during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He received US Patent No. US 1970092 in 1934 for the device. In the early 1960s a small circus came to Hartwick, Iowa. The circus stopped in several small Poweshiek County, Iowa, towns for a night. The circus consisted of a tent and a clown and a small parade including an elephant. Pictures were taken from the Benda's front yard in Hartwick.

Description

Counter checks from a variety of Poweshiek County (Iowa) banks. Counter checks were kept at the cash register of a business. Customers could write in their bank account number and use the checks as they would a personal check. These checks have MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) codes on them which the Federal Reserve began requiring in 1967.
