Description: View of a turn of the century fire truck pulled by 3 horses. The fire service in Davenport began in 1858 with the Hawkeye Volunteer Fire Company. The chief of this volunteer company was Chief Littler, a Civil War veteran who had one arm. In 1882, the City of Davenport established a professional, paid, fire department. They also used volunteers for three years. In 1885 the department became 100% paid professional fire fighters. The first chief of this all paid department was Chief Marsh Noel. By 1905 the City of Davenport could boast of seven pumper companies and two truck companies providing protection. 1910 postmark. Number 136.

The Bever Park Zoo, which would become home to lions, bears, alligators, monkeys and other animals, opened in 1901, and trolley service to the park, then two miles outside of the Cedar Rapids city limits, began in 1904. 1910 postmark.
