The Iowa Soldiers Home accepted its first resident in 1887 when the facility provided living quarters for displaced veterans of the War Between the States. The residents' work contributed to the Home's self-sufficiency. Residents raised cattle and hogs, harvested and stored fruit and vegetables on a little over 160 acres. 1913 postmark.

The Newton High School was erected in 1907 at a cost of $72,000. It was built on the most modern and approved plans for school buildings, even to the items of sanitary drinking fountains. The building was demolished in 1957. 1908 postmark.
