Looking northeast at one of many boarding houses used to board Iowa State Normal School students. The students received both room and board at the houses, which were named for their owners. The expenses were comparable to on-campus living. In 1891, the charges were between $3.00-3.50 for a week; in 1912, rent was $2.00-$2.50 per week and meals $3.00-$4.00 per week. Many of the rooming houses still exist today in the College Hill area. Some have been converted into apartments while others are still private residences. Series 732.

View of a turn of the century fire truck pulled by 3 horses. The fire service in Davenport began in 1858 with the Hawkeye Volunteer Fire Company. The chief of this volunteer company was Chief Littler, a Civil War veteran who had one arm. In 1882, the City of Davenport established a professional, paid, fire department. They also used volunteers for three years. In 1885 the department became 100% paid professional fire fighters. The first chief of this all paid department was Chief Marsh Noel. By 1905 the City of Davenport could boast of seven pumper companies and two truck companies providing protection. 1910 postmark. Number 136.

Jimmy Ley was posthumously awarded two Purple Hears and an Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters for sustaining wounds resulting in death during a combat mission and for meritorious achievement while participating in five bombardment missions over active enemy occupied territory, respectively. The two medals were mounted and framed by Jimmy's parents.
