Many immigrants passed through Angel Island, but the majority came from China. Chinese immigrants were often detained for long periods. . In order to express the feelings of frustration, hopelessness and sadness that came with their extensive detainment, many Chinese immigrants turned to poetry. This contribution translates 11 of these Chinese poems into English and provides a contextual essay for the translations.
