Description: Looking northwest at the largest building in the downtown. The seven-story Renaissance Revival style "L-plan" building was designed by Seth E. Temple and Parke T. Burrows, constructed in 1910-1911 by Westlake Construction Company, and was the first building in Burlington of steel frame construction throughout, making it the first to be entirely fireproof. It is located at 206 North Third Street. Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. 1911 postmark. Number A-9725.

Title: Vennard College (University Park, Iowa), John Fletcher College (University Park, Iowa), Kletzing College (University Park, Iowa), Central Holiness University, Oskaloosa, Iowa
Description: In 1951, the college, originally named Chicago Evangelistic Institute (CEI) and located in Chicago, Illiniois, was moved to University Park where it was renamed Vennard College. Central Holiness University was responsible for creating the town known as University Park. It was the dream of W.R. and Eloise Gilmore to create an institution for religious studies. With the help of the Iowa Holiness Association, which the Gilmore's belonged to, a 121 acre plot of land was discovered due east of Oskaloosa, which the Gilmore's purchased to build their dream. 75 of the 121 acres was to be used for the campus, with the other 46 acres to be sold off publicly to make up for what the property cost. Central Holiness University held its first classes in the Fall of 1906 with two-hundred students. Over the years, the University changed names, but has always maintained a religious purchase. Today, the higher education facility is known as Vennard College, which is a branch of the Chicago Evangelistic Institute. 1911 postmark. Number 1703.

Title: Chicago and Great Western Depot, Diagonal, Iowa, C.G.W. Depot
Description: Looking north at the Diagonal Depot. In 1880, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) Railroad passed through the town of Goshen. In 1885 the Chicago Great Western Railroad (CGW) came through Knowlton. At a point approximately two miles from Goshen and Knowlton the tracks crossed diagonally with the CB&Q passing on a creaky bridge with the CGW on firm ground. The town known as Diagonal was officially incorporated in 1888 at this crossing. It was reported that eight passenger trains a day once stopped at Diagonal. 1911 postmark.

Description: Looking southeast at the Cedar River which is a tributary of the Iowa River and flows to the Mississippi River. The Cedar River takes its name from the red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) trees growing there, and was originally called the Red Cedar River by the Meskwaki Indians. Ellis Park was named for Robert Ellis, the patriarch and honored citizen of Cedar Rapids and Linn County who took active and helpful part in the early development of the city and county. 1911 postmark.
