Title

Investigations: a Handbook for Biology Courses
-
Description
-
The goal of this handbook is to communicate to students the opportunities they have in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry, as well as the expectations of their work in Grinnell College courses. Because of the close interaction between courses required for the Biology, Chemistry and Biological Chemistry majors, we recognize the need to speak in one voice about our approaches to teaching science. While you will find many differences between courses in our departments, we hope you will recognize and learn the common skills that are fundamental to good scientific understanding and practice.

We Are What We Eat: Food, Culture, and Identity in Literature and Film, Food, Culture, and Identity in Literature and Film
-
Description
-
In this tutorial we will examine the cultural and political significance of food in literature and film. We will focus on the way national cultures and personal identities are described and defined through narratives of the preparation, consumption, and appreciation of food in twentieth-century Chinese and Chinese American literature and film. Additionally, the course will integrate samples from other cultures and periods as points of comparison. Extracurricular activities, such as a restaurant visit, will also be included to facilitate our understanding and analysis of the culture of food.
