The Elkhorn Lutheran High School and College was established in 1878 to "help young folk coming over here from the fatherland, Denmark, to obtain such an instruction as weould qualify them for their professions or work in this country". The instruction was given in Danish and English. The main building was destroyed in a fire in 1910 and a new building dedicated the same year. The college was discontinued in the 1950s.

Looking southeast at the Cedar River which is a tributary of the Iowa River and flows to the Mississippi River. The Cedar River takes its name from the red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) trees growing there, and was originally called the Red Cedar River by the Meskwaki Indians. Ellis Park was named for Robert Ellis, the patriarch and honored citizen of Cedar Rapids and Linn County who took active and helpful part in the early development of the city and county. 1911 postmark.
