Looking northeast at the front entrance of the First Presbyterian Church built in 1865. This building was raised and a new, larger church building was built in 1887. It was located at 634 Willow Avenue, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. 1905 postmark. Number 19.

Looking northeast at one of many boarding houses used to board Iowa State Normal School students. The students received both room and board at the houses, which were named for their owners. The expenses were comparable to on-campus living. In 1891, the charges were between $3.00-3.50 for a week; in 1912, rent was $2.00-$2.50 per week and meals $3.00-$4.00 per week. Many of the rooming houses still exist today in the College Hill area. Some have been converted into apartments while others are still private residences. Series 732.

Description

One of the first hotels in Creston, Iowa, the Summit Hotel, was built in 1880 by a stock company composed of Swan & Becker and Colonel Beckwith, among others, and was destroyed by fire in 1896. The hotel owners rebuilt on the same site later that year, but shortly before midnight on December 1916 another fire destroyed the building. The loss was estimated at $200,000 and defective electrical wiring was believed to have caused the fire. Creston centennial card, 1869-1969.
