This view, looking southeast across the rubble to Broad Street and Central Park, shows the temporary huts built by merchants to house the post office, bank, and other businesses.

As a result of the fire, the City Council set up a fire zone and forbade the use of wooden awnings. The width of Commercial Street, which varied, also was made uniform.
